Why SHIELD's Dominance of the Social Media Landscape is no Surprise

So…today’s Hollywood Reporter article talks about how Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (and yeah, yeah, The Blacklist too) is dominating social media conversation, saying it’s “…the top new ABC — and overall — show in terms of viewer engagement on social media” with “[n]early half the SHIELD conversation (45 percent) centered on the character of Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), who [spoiler alert!] was killed in The Avengers.”

This doesn’t exactly come as much of a surprise to the more…let’s say ‘enthusiastic’ of the Marvel Cinematic Universe fan base - and most particularly to those of us who spent half a year refusing to accept that Phil Coulson was really gone, despite all evidence in The Avengers to the contrary. Note: it’s not as if we were the first fans to take this kind of stance (just ask anybody who remembers Clan Denial from the penultimate season of Highlander: the Series), but we were certainly one of the most tenacious, and that tenacity was rewarded (Look, for all I know, Joss Whedon and Kevin Feige might have been plotting to bring Phil back from the moment The Avengers script was written, but I prefer to believe we made it happen with the power of our collective weeping and wailing.)

I get what you are saying. In my opinion having him…not be dead almost takes away the impact of his character. His death (had it been real) would have been amazing because that simply doesn’t happen anymore. The good guy always lives in one way or another but to honestly have them be human and die…I find that much more meaningful then a ‘fake out’ and a television show of all things to be like ‘oh wait…I am not dead. Bad joke, sorry.’

They have been anticipating these concerns, though, so it’s something they’ve actually put some thought into handling in a satisfactory way beyond ‘oh hey not dead jk’,

I felt pretty dead. So I was wary as to how can we do that in a way that doesn’t feel like it undermines any of the magic that I thought was there in “The Avengers,” and as soon as I heard the concept and saw the script, I realized it was worth doing.

Joss Whedon: And then, you know, “What about Coulson?” And obviously, the first question, was, “Will this upset the integrity of what we did in ‘The Avengers?’” You don’t want to do that. I worked in comics and TV and fantasy for a long time, and I know that there’s a right way and a wrong way to do stuff like that.

It’s like, “If we were going to have Coulson, how would we even do it?” Well, we’d do exactly this. That’s what I pitched to [Clark] on the phone, that’s what’s in the script, word for word, and it’s all about earning everything, so that people don’t feel that you lied, or that you pulled one over on them, that you have an explanation that you buy.

So basically, until we see exactly how the return is handled, I think reserving judgment is probably the best thing to do under the circumstances.

Not having Agent Coulson stay dead creates little sense or danger or repercussion in the Marvel Movie Continuity. Opinion further validated by ending of Iron Man 3.

Yes I know it’s a adapted comic movie series but I’m looking at it from a screenwriter’s POV.

It’s not entirely unpopular. I’ve definitely seen it around.

However, I’m personally optimistic, and that was reinforced by this interview.

Oh yeah those two schooling people. Like, apparently the actor for Melinda is 49, which ???? she looks like she’s 25. So since she’s older, she’s been around as long as Coulson and she’s a pilot so I’m betting Air Force and then recruited. And hell yeah, the “older” folk kicking ass. I like to think that the high level agents go out drinking very occasionally and just have a fucking party. Because they can. Like, Nick and Maria and Phil are really close because they work together so much and when they’re off duty they call each other by their first names and/or nicknames.

So now obviously Phil and his team are going to get close and that will happen too. Drinking fics all around!

This is why that quote from Joss that everyone is tweeting about, “An actor so talented that even I couldn’t kill him,” gets to me. It may be humorous, but there is truth in it, because he is. He took a tiny bit part and brought so much life to it that they kept bringing him back, and we all fell so much in love that we just refused to let him die.
